Circle of Life: an exercise to identify areas you’re finding less satisfying

August 10, 2017 by Kylie Bevan

One of the first exercises I do with health coaching clients is the Circle of Life, as it’s a great visual picture of aspects which are fulfilling at this stage of your life, and which need a bit more love and focus.

To feel truly happy and healthy, most of us need to feel satisfied in a range of aspects, including health, physical activity, home cooking, home environment, relationships, social life, joy, spirituality, creativity, finances, career and education.

Give to Yourself

August 20, 2015 by Kylie Bevan

Give to yourself so you may give to others

I love being a health coach.

For two big reasons.

  1. Clients

In inspiring them to embrace a wonderful and fulfilling life, I am motivated to do so too. Can’t imagine a better job.

  1. Peers

Knowing that in some circles I am not considered an oddball for loving green smoothies … my job … fermenting things in the kitchen … practicing gratitude … cacao mousse made with avocado … finding time in my week for play and meditation and to be offline and to just be.

Recently that was a room of 300 like-minded souls at the Institute of Integrative Nutrition Sydney Conference.

A recurring theme of the day – or perhaps the one I most needed to hear and therefore I heard again and again – was that you can only give if you are full yourself. I mentioned this in Your Relocation Solution too. When you are on a plane, you should fit your own oxygen mask before helping others. Because you are no good to others or yourself without it. Lessons from Bali – balance, gratitude and positivity

December 2, 2013 by Kylie Bevan

Australia is undoubtedly a lucky country. We are blessed with opportunities and services – education, health care, clean water, fresh food, career choice, peace and so much more.

So why is it that on my recent holiday, the Balinese seemed to more content, more community-minded, more happy, and definitely much less stressed, than most Aussies?

Driver Dewa Alit puts it down to three things – balance, gratitude and positivity.

Balance – the number three rules in Bali. Three shakes of holy water as you enter a temple. One god with three aspects – Brahma the creator, Vishnu the protector and Shiva the destroyer. The trio of harmonious relationships – between humans, between humans and God, between humans and nature.  Mind, body, spirit. The three Buddhist ideals of right mind, right speech, right action.  The number of days it takes to relax – okay, that last one might have been just my experience.

Gratitude – every morning Balinese thank god for the day to come, every meal they thank god again, and in the evening they thank god for the day that has been.

Positivity – Balinese people smile often. They look for the good in everything and everyone.

What could be more balanced in your life? Work & life balance is often touted, but how about sitting, resting & active? Family, partner & self time? Acidic, neutral & alkalising food?

How could you welcome gratitude into your day? Perhaps jot down three things you are happy for when you first wake? Or as you get into bed at night, list three things you appreciate happened that day?

Would being more positive allow you to smile more often? Could you look for the silver lining in the challenge you are facing? Perhaps gently remind yourself that you may not be able to change a situation, but you can choose how you react to it?

I’d love to hear your thoughts or experiences, join in the conversation by leaving a reply.

How to Live a Ridiculously Good Life

November 1, 2013 by Kylie Bevan

Now that’s a DIY book many of us could do with!

Who do you think it was written by? A celebrity perhaps? Someone born into a wealthy family? Someone blessed with an easy life?

Or perhaps someone born without arms or legs?

Nick Vujicic, firstborn of a pediatric nurse and an accountant, was born without limbs.

Life Without Limits

Life Without Limits tells his story, written – and typed – by Nick, published in 2010. At 28 years of age, he was an international inspirational speaker, in schools, churches and sports stadiums, drawing crowds of tens of thousands.

Since then, he has married. And become a dad!

From the book, here are some excerpts that filled my heart, my soul, my being.

The essential truth is this: Each of us has some gift – a talent, a skill, a craft, a knack – that gives us pleasure and engages us, and the path to our happiness often lies within that gift.

What do you find yourself drawn to? What do you spend hours doing, losing track of time and place, and still want to do again and again? Now, what is it that other people see in you? Do they compliment your talent for organization or your analytical skills?

These are the clues to finding your life’s path, a path that lies secreted within in. We all arrive on this earth naked and full of promise. We come packed with presents waiting to be opened. When you find something that so fully engages you that you would do it for free all day every day, then you are on course. When you find someone who is willing to pay for it, then you have a career.

When you experience a tragedy or a personal crisis, it’s perfectly normal and probably healthy to go through stages of fear and anger and sadness, but at some point we all have to say: “I’m still here. Do I want to spend the rest of my life wallowing in misery, or do I want to rise above what has happened to me and pursue my dreams?”

There are many attitudes to choose from, but I believe the most powerful are:

  1. An attitude of gratitude
  2. An attitude of action
  3. An attitude of empathy
  4. An attitude of forgiveness

We easily become trapped in the “someday” mentality.

Someday I’ll have all the money I need so I can enjoy life.

Someday I’ll be able to spend more time with my family.

Someday I’ll have time to relax and do what I love doing.

Nick’s encourages us instead to take ridiculous risk – blow past the doubters and naysayers and live your dreams, and have ridiculous fun – laugh, love and be playful.

Need some further motivation that you can do anything you truly want to do?

5 minutes 6 minutes

What resonated with you? What changes would you like to make, to your attitude, your lifestyle, your beliefs?

I’d love to hear your story, your challenges, your concerns, your successes. Comment by ‘leaving a reply’.

Your health is as important to you as you are to your health

September 10, 2013 by Kylie Bevan

How important is health and wellness?

What is feeling energetic and excited about life worth to you?  What would you pay to make better use of the hours in your day? How much would you give to reduce or eliminate niggly pains or health concerns?

What is your health and happiness worth?

Is it possible to even put it into dollar figures?

$5 per day?

$10 per day?

$100 per day?

For 2013, health coaching at Health & Wellness Revolution costs about the same as a takeaway coffee each day.

At $160 per month, including fortnightly one-on-one coaching sessions, informative handouts, recipes, email support and product discounts, this is one expense worth considering if you’re ready to move from ‘just surviving’ to thriving. How important is health and wellness to you?

What’s more, you can taste before you buy. The first session is free, an opportunity to discuss where your heath is, where you’d like it to be, and to determine whether Health Coach Kylie is the best person to get you there.

Tailored to suit you, your situation and your dreams, sessions may cover nutrition, exercise, career, relationships, stress, time management, or passion for life. For many, it’s all of these – it’s not just food that feeds your body and soul. Many factors interrelate to create a life that is exciting and fulfilling, or exhausting and unsatisfying.

If you’re ready to make achievable lifestyle changes toward a healthier and happier life, take that first step now.  Invest in your best asset – yourself. Contact me here.

Why getting away from it all allows you to give your all

July 4, 2013 by Kylie Bevan

To have a truly balanced life you might find you need some spiritual time.

For me, spiritual means knowing why I am here, my purpose in life.

I love taking a break from everyday routine, retreating to the bush, reminding myself what is truly important.

Family, friends, health, community, air, food and water – and having a positive impact on those around me.

What does spirituality mean to you?

Rather than a wordy blog post today, I’ve collected some photos from my ‘spiritual retreat’ last week, a three day bush walk in the Sunshine Coast hinterland with my husband (with kids happily ensconced with gran).

Lying down, with a view of blue sky through the trees, is one of my favourite places to be!

Warning: cliches ahead …

Sometimes you need to stick your head out to live the best life possible.

Persistence is an admirable trait – but sometimes you will still run out of time or energy.
(As cranky as I was at this bush rat for so quietly destroying my expensive pack overnight, I did feel a little sorry that after all his hard work he couldn’t penetrate the plastic container of food.)

You’ll reach your goals sooner if you know what they are, but sometimes it’s more fun to take the less direct route.

It’s only from the valley that the mountain seems impossibly high.

Wonderful things can happen when we work with nature.

Ask for support, from family, friends, professionals – but be aware of their needs too.

Enjoy the still moments after the rush.

Together we are stronger than alone.

Enjoy a helping hand from those who have been there before you.

I’d love to hear what you do spiritually, just comment below! You can even get me back with some cliches of your own.
