Oh, so sorry.
Not the words you want to hear on the very first snip, having requested a trim, as you watch many centimetres of hair fall to the ground.
Perhaps I should have known better. I’d already had a win.
Earlier this year I had finally braced myself for a salon haircut, after two years of just letting it grow, rather than find a hairdresser who could handle my fine, thin, straight hair – rather different to the South Pacific mass of tight curls.
There had been one exception in that two years, when I asked my husband to trim the split ends. Yes, he did have to continue working upwards until achieving an almost straight line, but no split ends remained.
Then, in January this year, feeling adventurous, I dropped into a salon for a simple trim, requesting a straight cut along the ends of my now quite long hair.
I somehow come out with a new style, which I loved, shaping around my face in a soft and feminine way.
This week I returned to the same salon, same hairdresser. Knowing he spoke no English, the ni-Vanuatu lady and I discussed at length, with the aid of photos and demonstration, exactly what I wanted again – the same style he had created last time. That is, a trim of my current style.
I listened as she explained it to him in simple Bislama, all good, just what I was after.
From the very first Oh, so sorry I knew I was in for a new style. I hoped for the best, as he had created something I really liked last time.
No, not this time.
It’s the way things seem to be where we currently live. Long-timers call it hit and miss. Restaurant meals, food availability, contents as described on the packet. Haircuts.
You might score a hit. Or maybe not. Best to make a game of it. Laugh over the outcome.
So, my hair will grow. I have absolutely no split ends. I have a few months before the heat hits again, and it is hopefully long enough to be pulled into a ponytail and off my sweaty neck.
And the best thing is, we don’t have to move on yet.
I’d love to hear a story of not getting quite what you expected in your new location, do comment below!
