Where do you live now, and where have you lived?
Currently living in Brisbane, Australia.
Have lived in Sydney, Canberra, Byron Bay, UK, Japan and Taiwan.
What do you do, what ‘hats do you wear’, how do you spend your time, paid and unpaid?
I am a founder of a mobile application All Pland. All Pland is both my work and leisure activities. It’s a life.
All Pland is a planner that helps people find business or leisure activities to do by enabling them to search and schedule events based on their chosen time, activities and location all within a planner. So they are always able to easily find events to join and meet new people doing the things they’d like doing in the next hours or plan things they’d doing weeks ahead, anywhere they are in the world.
All Pland helps people find and establish that important network, which enhances their social wellbeing when they first arrive to a new location, integrating their social life more seamlessly into their busy lifestyle.
All Pland is available on Google Play Store. It will also soon be available on Apple Store.
What have you gained by relocating?
The experience of relocating can be exhilarating at times, as you never really know if everything you planned will fall into place, yet at the same time it was that excitement that kept me on my toes thinking about ‘What if…’, What could have…’, ‘What about…’, and ‘How do you…’?
In many ways it was that process of expansive thinking, planning (or no planning!) and action, that made the whole relocating experience special for me. You could find out more about your personal traits (both the fun and serious sides!) all in one day.
What have been some of the challenges?
Other than sorting out accommodation, work and finding out where things are, the establishment of a supportive social network is one of the challenges for me.
The understanding of your physical surrounding can be done by exploring the city and walking around your neighbourhood, yet connecting with people and establishing important continuous social connections would require meeting people with common interests and doing things that you’d enjoying doing together to form that social bond. Having a tool helping you find things to do and forming that important social connections could all make the relocating experience enjoyable with less challenges.
What would you have missed out on, had you stayed in one place?
There are many advantages of both staying in one place and relocating, it is really about what you are looking for at your present stage in life.
Relocating is about re-establishment in all areas of life and it is this package of new adventure that may otherwise not be enjoyed if stayed in the same location. The change and transformation may go from what you normally eat and how you manage your daily travel e.g. from train, to cycling and enjoying a ferry ride, to adapting to new social norms and meeting people you would most unlikely to meet and connect to if you stayed in the same place.
What did you do to feel as healthy, capable and happy as possible while relocating?
I ensure I maintain my ‘social health’ by going to at least one event a week, meeting new people and expanding my circle of friends.
What would you say to others contemplating a relocation?
Do it and give it a try. The relocation adventure may be more than what you bargained for but may turn out to be a nice surprise.
Thank you Janine!
