One of the first exercises I do with health coaching clients is the Circle of Life, as it’s a great visual picture of aspects which are fulfilling at this stage of your life, and which need a bit more love and focus.
To feel truly happy and healthy, most of us need to feel satisfied in a range of aspects, including health, physical activity, home cooking, home environment, relationships, social life, joy, spirituality, creativity, finances, career and education.
Your Circle of Life Exercise
A concept from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition, you can complete your own Circle of Life here.
Quite simply, if one or more aspects of our life are not satisfying, other aspects can only partly compensate for the ‘loss’.
For example, even if we are eating healthily, have a satisfying job, and enjoy physical activity, not having friends to enjoy being with could really mar our overall health and happiness.
Likewise, if we’re surrounded by people who love and support us, however are no longer finding time to do something we know fills our soul, such as playing a musical instrument or painting, it may feel like there’s a void.
I like to refer to the circle of life as a wheel you’re travelling along life on. If your wheel is misshapen or pointy, then your journey might feel bumpy or even jolting. If your wheel is small, the journey will be hard work and tiring. However, if your wheel is plump and round, you’ll feel balanced and on track. Happy and healthy aboard your well-rounded circle of life!
This is an exercise you can do every three or six months, so you can track your progress. I’d suggest doing the exercise without looking at previous scores, and then comparing, for a more accurate result.
Did you do the exercise? Were there any surprises, high or low? What could you do to boost any low scores? Did you give yourself a pat on the back for the high scores? What can you do to maintain them?
